Where can it take your career?

The Install Trench Support Course is the latest nationally accredited course for individuals who are working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes. This course is perfect for learners who are:

  • who want to gain knowledge, practical skills, and experience in installing trench support.
  • who are unemployed, seeking work and/or employed, seeking to upgrade skills
  • who are seeking to upgrade their skills and use this skillset to become a construction hand, civil construction worker and asphalt worker.

How is the course delivered?

Training is delivered via Blended (Online distance learning + Face-to-face training and assessment).

Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed up to 3 days with pre-course learning.

Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 26 to 30 hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?

This course is designed to develop your expertise in installing trench support. Among others, you will learn to:

  • Install Trench Support
  • Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
  • Conduct local risk control

How is the course structured?

All learners will be assessed through:

  • Observation during on-the-job or role play/simulation
  • Questioning may include self-assessment, verbal answers, written questionnaires, activity modules or interview
  • Structured Activities may include Projects, Case studies, presentations, role play, demonstration, progressive tasks

What are the entry requirements?

Entry Requirements

  • Are 18 years of age and over
  • Are living or working in Australia
  • Have at least Year 10 English proficiency level, or equivalent, and basic numeracy skills*
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Ability to handle tools and equipment

*Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements of the course may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.

Physical attributes requirements

Prospective students need to have the physical attributes to be able to:

  • Act (in line with own role) in an incident or an emergency response
  • Handle tools and equipment.

What are the resources needed to complete the course?

    • Policies and procedures required to install trench support, including those relating to:
      • Hazard and risk management
      • Work health and safety
      • Working in confined spaces
      • Emergency response
      • Site and equipment safety
      • Environmental protection waste management
      • Communication techniques and equipment
      • Workplace recording and reporting
      • Site isolation and traffic control responsibilities
      • Operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures
      • Project quality requirements
      • Job plans and specifications
      • Housekeeping activities
      • Fitness of duty
      • Workplace management
      • Emergency response
    • Workplace documentation, including but not limited to:
      • Materials safety data sheets
      • Job safety analyses / job safety environmental analyses / safe work method statements
      • Hazard reporting reports
      • Incident reports
      • Near miss reports

Students enrolled in this course may also choose to study other courses relevant to entering and working in confined spaces. Other options available for students may include the following qualifications:

  • RII20720 Certificate II Civil Construction*
  • RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction*
  • RII30820 Certificate III in Civil Construction Plants Operations*

Completion of this course may also lead to the following roles:

Shore Train has a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy, to ensure that an individual’s prior learning, achieved through formal and informal training, work experience or other life experiences, is appropriately recognised. This recognition may assist Learners to progress faster through a unit of competency or allow the student full credit.
