Where can it take your career?

The Confined Space Entry Course is the latest nationally accredited course for people who are working in operational roles. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

This course is perfect for learners:

  • who are unemployed, seeking work and/or employed, seeking to upgrade skills

How is the course delivered?

Training is delivered via Blended (Online distance learning + Face-to-face training and assessment)

Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed up to 3 days with pre-course learning.

Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 28-32 hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?

This course is designed to develop your expertise in confined space entry. Among others, you will learn to:

  • Work in accordance with an issued permit
  • Operate breathing apparatus
  • Gas test atmospheres
  • Enter and work in confined spaces

How is the course structured?

All learners will be assessed through:

  • Observation during on-the-job or role play/simulation
  • Questioning may include self-assessment, verbal answers, written questionnaires, activity modules or interview
  • Structured Activities may include Projects, Case studies, presentations, role play, demonstration, progressive tasks

What are the entry requirements?

Students must:

    • Are 18 years of age and over
    • Are living or working in Australia
    • Have at least Year 10 English proficiency level, or equivalent, and basic numeracy skills*
    • Have basic computer skills
    • Ability to handle tools and equipment, and in good mental health condition to work comfortably in confined spaces and is not claustrophobic.

    *Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements of the course may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.

    Physical attributes requirements

    Prospective students need to have the physical attributes to be able to:

    • Act (in line with own role) in an incident or an emergency response
    • Handle tools and equipment
    • Enter and exit a confined space.

Pre- requisites/ Co- requisites

Students must be marked as Competent in the following unit or RPL/ Credit transfer the pre-requisite before they can proceed with MSMPER205 Enter confined space.

  • MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit

    • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    • Safe work method statements (SWMSs)
    • Formulas/recipes
    • Batch sheets
    • Temporary instructions
    • Any similar instructions provided for the smooth running of the plant
  • Secure worksite
    • Simulated confined space environment
    • Signs
    • Barriers
    • Other requirements as defined in the confined space entry permit requirements, AS2865-2009 Confined spaces and other relevant requirements
  • Tools and equipment, including but not limited to:
    • Instruments and monitors:
      • Instruments used for pre-entry testing appropriate to the hazards
      • Continuous monitors appropriate for the hazards
      • Other devices used to test the confined space atmosphere
    • PPE, such as:
      • Eye protection
      • Ear protection
      • Gloves
      • Clothing
      • Respiratory protection
      • Helmets
      • Safety footwear
      • Lifelines and harnesses
      • Personal monitors and alarms
      • Other relevant PPE
    • Breathing apparatus, including one or more of open circuit:
      • Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

      • Other similar breathing apparatus

      • Lifeline communication
      • Radio communication
      • Other relevant communication aids
    • Portable instruments
    • Sampling tubes and pumps

  • Workplace documentation, including but not limited to:
    • Confined space permit
    • Entry/exit/re-entry logs

    • Signing-off of permit
    • Documentation related to equipment used
    • Other required records

What are the Qualification Pathways?

Students enrolled in this course may also choose to study other courses relevant to entering and working in confined spaces. Other options available for students may include the following qualifications:

  • RII30520 Certificate III in Mining Exploration*
  • RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue*
  • RII40920 Certificate IV in Drilling Operations*

Completion of this course may also lead to the following roles:

  1. Underground coal miner
  2. Civil construction worker
  3. Process support operator

Is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) available?

Shore Train has a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy, to ensure that an individual’s prior learning, achieved through formal and informal training, work experience or other life experiences, is appropriately recognised. This recognition may assist Learners to progress faster through a unit of competency or allow the student full credit.

*RPL does not apply to the following three units contained within this course:

  • MSMPER205 Enter confined space – AS2865-2009 Confined spaces requires that persons be reassessed at appropriate intervals, which the industry has regarded reassessment on a two-year cycle as good practice
  • MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus – AS/NZS1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment requires that retraining and reassessment must be completed annually, at a minimum
  • MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres – industry regards reassessment on a two-year cycle as good practice
